United Nations Sustainable Development Goals & the City of Athens

The City of Athens sets priorities and invests in actions that will enable Athens to reach the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN and deliver prosperity for all by 2030.Supporting sustainable tourism practices, the city of Athens through the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency has joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) as a destination member. This partnership will help ADDMA to orient the local tourism sector toward our sustainability goals.

Sustainable events in Athens

With the launch of the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the meetings industry has refocused towards the 2030 achievement of responsible targets. As the meeting industry looks for solutions towards a sustainable future, our potential for our sector to create positive impact also increases. This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau, supports sustainable practices and their members by providing training on the implementation of sustainable event planning processes and thus creating a culture of sustainable decision-making. Through sustainability practices This is Athens-CVB contributes to efficiently address the global challenges.

Sustainability Strategy

Actions related to the Scientific Program

  • Promotion of the COSPAR Panel on Planetary Protection prior and during the Meeting Program.
  • Workshop entitled “Enriching Scientific Discovery through Inclusiveness, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility – IDEA for Today and Tomorrow” during COSPAR 2022

During the 44th Scientific Assembly in Athens, COSPAR will organize an important workshop focused on these issues, “Enriching Scientific Discovery through Inclusiveness, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility – IDEA for Today and Tomorrow”.  Recognized experts who have devoted their careers to advocating for diversity and inclusion will share their perspectives, the critical imperative to cultivate diversity, and the way in which COSPAR can lead these efforts in the global scientific community. As a first step to implementation, COSPAR approved the appointment of the first Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Coordination Officer (ICO), reporting to the President and Bureau in a 4-year term to 2026.

  • Panel on Innovative Solutions

In space sciences, indeed in all of science, the development of innovative technologies opens new fields of research and provides sophisticated new tools for research. The Panel on Innovative Solutions will provide a forum, open to all COSPAR Associates, to present, consider and discuss new technologies for and approaches to scientific research.

Actions related to the Meeting

  • Participation of 140+ volunteers during COSPAR 2022

More than 140 volunteers, students and young scientists from the University of Athens and other academic institutions will be part of the team supporting the ultimate event on Space Research and will also have the opportunity to attend as participants in the educational program

  • Encouraging Knowledge and Expertise sharing

This action will be achieved throughout the entire Meeting Program, however special support or benefits offered to students will be valued additionally. The COSPAR 2022 Grants Program will add on the overall sustainability process. The sustainable goal focusing on education will be fully incorporated in the COSPAR 2022 design and operations

  • Education for Young Leaders of the Space Community

Cospar 2022 will contribute greatly to the transfer of knowledge to the Next Generation Leadership on the Research for Space and aims in bringing young scientists closer to the Community

  • Promotion of local sights and culture

A complete program of tours has been created and is promoted extensively through the website, newsletter and SoMe. Additionally, detailed information is provided on the Astronomical facilities of the host city. The event is focused in highlighting the highlights of the destination

  • Promotion of the local biodiversity (promote sightseeing with environmental interest etc)

This action is achieved in close cooperation with The Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau and is promoted through the meeting website and SoMe.

  • Digital app and reduction of printings

A dedicated digital app has been created including all relevant information about the meeting program

  • Hybrid component

COSPAR 2022 will be a hybrid event, with emphasis on physical participation. The digital element is fully incorporated in the meeting

  • Inclusion – Involving Delegates

Encouraging delegates to recycle and contribute to the overall sustainability strategy of the meeting by using the conference app

  • Sustainability Strategy by all Meeting Suppliers

Partners involved in the execution of the meeting are encouraged to follow and have showcased their sustainability strategies and actions

  • Encouraging Early Registration

Encourage early registration and discourage on-site registration [so that logistics (printed material and food) can be based on the exact number of participants and avoid surplus]     

  • Catering Services

Creating of a vegetarian menu as part of the catering services. Use of local and organic food products and local recipes (if possible) and showcase it / let participants know (eg labels during lunch “local organic tomato salad”).
